A Thanksgiving table is a long room inside a room. We dress it as a single line: a linen runner, a loose garland of eucalyptus and olive along it, seven brass candlesticks and a scattering of white pumpkins. It stays low enough that everyone can see across.
The settings are quiet on purpose. Cream stoneware on woven chargers and plain linen let the food be the color on the table.
The Plan
- 1Linen runner. Natural linen, end to end, with a few inches of overhang.
- 2Eucalyptus garland. Laid loose along the runner; tuck olive branches from the yard in between.
- 3Brass candlesticks and ivory tapers. Seven along the center line, at slightly different heights.
- 4Small white pumpkins. Tucked into the garland between the candlesticks.
- 5Woven chargers. Under each plate, eight in all.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Lay the runner, then candlesticks, then garland, then pumpkins. Keep everything on the centerline under 14 inches, except the candle flames.
Light
Dim the overhead fixture to a third and let the tapers do the rest. If the windows face west, eat at sunset.
Budget
Tier II ($300 to $800): about $430 for everything on the list below at today's prices.
