New Year's Eve outside is a commitment, and the design has to make it comfortable. Black posts carry warm Edison strings across the terrace. A propane heater stands at the side of the table, and two groups of lit potted evergreens at the front corners make the terrace a room.
On the table are two lanterns and one champagne bucket. The string lights are the chandelier.
The Plan
- 1Edison string lights. Zigzagged between four posts.
- 2Patio heater. At the left, upwind of the table.
- 3Teak table and lanterns. Two black lanterns with LED candles.
- 4Champagne bucket. Silver, in the middle of the table.
- 5Lit potted evergreens. Two groups of three at the front corners.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Set the posts first and hang the strings with 6 to 12 inches of sag per run. Keep the heater 3 feet from anything that can burn, strings included.
Light
The strings on a dimmer plug at about 70 percent. At midnight, dim them all the way and let the lanterns take over.
Budget
Tier III ($800 and up): about $1,090 for everything on the list below at today's prices.
