A processional is a route that has been lit. Before anyone reaches your door they walk through it, and the walk sets the tempo. Here, matched black lanterns mark the brick path in pairs, each with a small ivory pumpkin, and a thin fog lies just under knee height.
Nothing is scary on this lane. It is simply darker than the street, and brighter at the door, which is all a guest's eye needs to follow.
The Plan
- 1Paired lanterns. Four matched pairs of black lanterns along both edges of the walk, LED candles inside.
- 2Ivory pumpkins. One beside each lantern, tucked on the walk side.
- 3Low fog. A thin layer over the walk. The machine hides in the right-hand bed, on a timer; fog flows downhill, so place it at the high end.
- 4Ornamental grasses. Existing planting. Let the lantern light catch the seed heads.
- 5The brick walk. Keep it clear and swept: the walk is the stage floor.
- 6Door evergreens. The two evergreens at the door frame the end of the route.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Space lanterns at roughly one-and-a-half times the walk's width, measured on center. Set the pair nearest the door first and work back to the street.
Light
Battery LED candles on timers. The door's own porch light should be the brightest thing on the lot; everything else stays at candle level.
Budget
Tier II ($300 to $800): about $330 for everything on the list below at today's prices.
