The trick to a grand Halloween facade is restraint. A mansard house already reads as a set; the job is to light it like the first scene of a play, not the last act of a carnival. We keep the porch in warm, low key light, let two upstairs windows glow, and give the lawn one character, lit from the ground so its shadow climbs the clapboard.
Everything else is atmosphere. Fog stays at ankle height on a timer, the bare trees frame the stage, and two lanterns mark the steps so guests know where the light wants them to walk.
The Plan
- 1Robed reaper figure. A single seven-and-a-half-foot animated figure, set off-center on the left lawn so it reads against the dark siding.
- 2Ground spotlight on the figure. Low and in front, aimed up steeply. Underlighting turns a prop into a presence.
- 3Candle lanterns on the steps. Two pairs, on the bottom and top steps, LED candles inside. They show guests where the light wants them to walk.
- 4Corner uplights. A warm spotlight at the base of each end column, grazing straight up.
- 5Low fog. Thin fog at ankle height over the lawn. The machine itself sits out of sight behind the right-hand shrubs, on a timer.
- 6Framing trees. The two bare trees stay dark. They are the proscenium.
- 7Two lit upstairs windows. The two left-hand windows on the second floor only, amber, as if someone is still awake.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Set the figure first, then walk to the curb and move it until its head clears the porch roofline. Run every fixture from one outdoor timer stake so the whole house comes up at dusk together.
Light
Warm white only on the architecture; let the figure's spotlight be the coolest light on the lot. Aim column uplights from 6 to 8 inches off the base so the beam grazes instead of flooding.
Budget
Tier II ($300 to $800): about $500 for everything on the list below at today's prices.
