Not every porch wants a scare. This one borrows from old apothecary shelves: dark wood, pale glass, labels in a careful hand. The house is black, so the decor stays pale and mineral. Ivory, slate-blue and bottle-green pumpkins, two black lanterns, and a wreath made only of branches.
The composition is a near-symmetry that is allowed to break: pumpkins pile heavier on the left, the bench sits to the right of the door, and one lantern stands alone. It reads as collected rather than bought.
The Plan
- 1Branch wreath. Dried black-stained branches with a black satin ribbon tail. Hang it slightly high so it clears the door glass.
- 2Black lanterns. Two at the front edge of the porch left of the steps, one at the right, LED candles inside on a timer.
- 3Black coir mat. A dark mat keeps the threshold quiet.
- 4Bench and grey throw. A painted bench with a folded wool throw gives the porch a reason to be sat on.
- 5Left pumpkin cluster. Five or six pumpkins, the largest at the back. Mix real heirlooms with faux so the arrangement lasts.
- 6Right pumpkin cluster. A smaller echo of the left, two sizes only.
- 7Black porch posts. The posts and railings stay bare; the palette is carried by the steps.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Build the pumpkin clusters on the steps before anything else; they set the scale for the lanterns. Faux pumpkins at the bottom of each stack carry the weight, real ones on top for texture.
Light
Lantern candles on a six-hour timer, starting at dusk. No colored light on this house. The point is that it looks lived in.
Budget
Tier I (Under $300): about $250 for everything on the list below at today's prices. Most of the money is in the faux pumpkins, which come back every year.
