The most beautiful Christmas facade in America is also the simplest: one wreath, one bow, one candle, every window. On a white Federal house with black shutters, the repetition is the whole design. Nine windows read as one gesture.
At the door, a garland swag and a pair of lit potted spruces. That is the entire scheme.
The Elevation
- 1Window wreaths with red velvet bows. Nine, one per window, hung on the outside on clear window hooks.
- 2Window candles. A single warm electric candle on every sill.
- 3Garland swag over the door. Draped across the door head, ends dropping a third of the way down the casing.
- 4Lit potted spruces. One each side of the door.
- 5Boxwood hedges. Leave them under snow.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Measure the window glass and size the wreaths to about a third of the sash width. Hang every wreath at the same height from the meeting rail; a laser level pays for itself here.
Light
Window candles on a dusk timer. Every candle must be the same color temperature. Buy them all at once.
Budget
Tier III ($800 and up): about $1,320 for everything on the list below at today's prices. The repetition is what costs: nine of everything.
