Thanksgiving is a holiday of arrivals, so the scene starts at the threshold. We open the front door and let late light fall across the floorboards, then give guests one picture to walk into: an old pine bench with a garland of autumn leaves along its back, real heirloom pumpkins stacked at its foot and a tall lantern at its far end.

The wreath goes on the inside of the door, not the outside. It is the last thing your guests see when they arrive and the first thing they see when they leave, and it reads beautifully with the door standing open.

The Elevation

  1. 1Wheat and cattail wreath. Hung on the inside of the front door at eye level, so it reads when the door stands open.
  2. 2Autumn leaf garland. Two lengths of lit maple garland: one laid along the back of the bench, one spilling down the far end to the floor.
  3. 3Heirloom pumpkins. Real ones from the farm stand: a flat cream Cinderella at the bottom, a sage Jarrahdale on top of it and a dusty orange Long Island Cheese beside. Faux pumpkins never stack this convincingly.
  4. 4Wheat in a stoneware crock. Three bunches of faux wheat in a tall grey crock you already own, set just inside the door.
  5. 5Floor lantern. The tall black lantern at the far end of the bench, its LED candle on a timer. It holds the right edge of the picture after dark.
  6. 6Rust runner. A washable runner in rust and cream along the hall. It carries the palette down to the floor and survives muddy boots.

Designer's Notes

Installation

Lay the bench garland first and anchor it at the back with two small zip ties, then let the second length fall from the far end. Stack the pumpkins last, biggest at the bottom, stems slightly off-axis so the stack looks found rather than placed.

Light

Stage it for the hour your guests arrive. In daylight let the open door do the work; after dark, the garland's lights and the lantern carry the scene, with the hall's overhead light off or dimmed low.

Budget

Tier I (Under $300): about $270 for everything on the list below at today's prices, plus the pumpkins from the farm stand.
