Every party ends up in the kitchen, so we dress it like a principal set rather than backstage. The range hood is the proscenium: a single lit fir garland runs across its face and falls a short way down each side, held by two red velvet bows at the corners.
The rest of the room repeats the cue in smaller type. A boxwood wreath in the window over the sink, two small battery-lit trees on the open shelves and one brass candlestick on the island. The red appears exactly three times and nowhere else.
The Elevation
- 1Lit fir garland on the hood. One 9-foot pre-lit garland across the front of the hood, with about a foot falling down each side. It runs on batteries, so no cord crosses the backsplash, and its timer brings it up at dusk.
- 2Red velvet bows. One at each top corner of the hood and one on the window wreath, tails left long.
- 3Removable garland hangers. Hidden behind the garland at each corner of the hood. No nails in the plaster.
- 4Boxwood wreath in the window. Hung on the inside of the window over the sink from a ribbon, so it reads from the room and from the street.
- 5Two small lit trees. Two-foot battery trees on the open shelves, one per shelf, offset rather than stacked. Drop each one into a terracotta pot you own.
- 6Candle on the island. A flameless taper with a moving wick in a brass candlestick you already own, at the end of the island beside a bowl of clementines.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Clean the hood where the hangers go and let the strips set for an hour before you load them. Hang the garland from the center out, then fluff each tip toward the room so it reads in profile as well as straight on.
Light
Garland on, under-cabinet lights on, overheads off. The garland should be the brightest thing on the hood and the wreath should catch spill from the room, not its own lights.
Budget
Tier I (Under $300): about $220 for everything on the list below at today's prices.
