A staircase garland fails in one of two ways: it is too thin, or the swags are uneven. We solve both. The garland is a full pre-lit length, doubled where the rail is long, and it hangs in equal swags. Each one is tied at its peak with a deep green velvet bow.
The decorated tree stands in the hall beyond the stair, so the lights stack up in depth when you look in from the front door.
The Elevation
- 1Pre-lit garland. Full pre-lit lengths, joined end to end.
- 2Velvet bows. Five, deep green, at each swag point.
- 3Swag ties. Zip ties or Command clips at each tie point, hidden under the bows.
- 4The tree in the hall. A full 7.5-foot pre-lit tree, set in the room beyond the stair.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Measure the rail and divide by the number of swags; mark the tie points with painter's tape before hanging. Tie the garland to the top of the rail, never to the balusters, so it can't slip. With plug-in garland, run the lead down the back of the newel to the nearest outlet.
Light
Garland lights on the same timer as the tree so the hall comes up as one.
Budget
Tier II ($300 to $800): about $510 for everything on the list below at today's prices.
