In a paneled library the mantel garland should feel abundant, so it runs the full shelf and falls a little at each end. Brass candlesticks stand in pairs at either side, and two cream linen stockings hang from brass holders.
The painting above stays unadorned. In a room this dark the fire and the garland's lights are the key light, and they are enough.
The Elevation
- 1Pre-lit noble fir garland. The whole shelf, falling at each end.
- 2Fresh cedar layer. Fresh cedar laid under the faux fir for scent and depth.
- 3Brass candlesticks. Two at each end of the shelf, ivory tapers.
- 4Linen stockings on brass holders. Two, evenly spaced.
- 5Painting. Leave it as it is.

Designer's Notes
Installation
Weight the garland with a mantel hanger or clips at each end before adding candlesticks. Keep greenery a hand's width back from any real flame.
Light
Fire, garland and candles only, with one reading lamp. That's the scene.
Budget
Tier II ($300 to $800): about $330 for everything on the list below at today's prices.
